Many Yorkie owners dread the onset of Yorkshire terrier potty training, because housebreaking this breed is one of the toughest, most challenging tests of patience when it comes to canine training.
There have been many horror stories recounted by Yorkie owners who have had a really tough time with Yorkshire terrier potty training, but the good news is that it’s not impossible, and certainly not all it’s made out to be if you keep a few things in mind and know what you are doing.
On that note, let’s see how Yorkshire terrier potty training can be made simpler and more manageable: The first rule of thumb is to know and accept the fact that the Yorkie is a breed that is naturally predisposed to taking a while to become potty trained. Your dog won’t pee or potty in your house just to annoy you even if it’s a boisterous, playful little bundle of joy. Hold on to your patience and keep encouraging it during potty training instead of ‘punishing’ it or rubbing its face in its feces or urine. That’s simply not the way to train a Yorkie or any other dog, and it certainly won’t help you achieve anything.
It’s a given that you need to take your Yorkie out the moment it wakes up, and do so before it goes to sleep. Between these two ‘potty breaks’, it is advisable to take your canine out again at least every 2 hours till such time it becomes familiar with the pattern, and you can increase this 2 hour interval to 3 hours or so. However, this would depend on each individual dog, so it’s best to use your own judgment.
To make things easier, don’t give your pooch too much water before bedtime, and also feed it earlier so that it can potty well before going to sleep.
One thing to remember while undertaking Yorkshire terrier potty training is that you have to be consistent with your pooch’s potty time. You can’t expect your pet not to defecate in your house if you only take it a few times a day, or if you keep changing its potty ‘schedules’. Once your pooch has got used to a fixed schedule, stick to it.
Positive reinforcement is a must for Yorkshire terrier potty training. When your Yorkie pees or poops outside, praise it and give it a reward or treat for a job well done. If, on the other hand, your pet tries to defecate indoors, tell him/her ‘Stop!’ or ‘No!’ in a calm, but authoritative tone and take it outside immediately.
If, for some reason, you can’t take your dog out every few hours due to work or other pressures, look to crate training as an effective form of Yorkshire terrier potty training.
